behaves as expected. Why can't this behave in the same way?

        <xsl:variable name="nextNode"
        select="following-sibling::node()"/>
        <xsl:apply-templates select="$nextNode" mode="leaf"/>
        <xsl:apply-templates select="." mode="leaf"/>
    </td>
</xsl:template>
