I got this exactly backwards. Xalan *does* handle this correctly. See this thread in the archives: http://www.biglist.com/lists/xsl-list/archives/200212/msg00790.html And if the default namespace has a null URI, then Xalan does output a separate close tag for <textarea>, as it should.
