You will need to use the <xsl:choose> element and its child elements <xsl:when> and <xsl:otherwise> to set up the subsitution you want.

<xsl:choose>
  <xsl:when test="something = 'a'">1</xsl:when>
  <xsl:when test="something = 'b'">2</xsl:when>
  <xsl:when test="something = 'c'">3</xsl:when>
  <xsl:when test="something = 'd'">4</xsl:when>
  <xsl:otherwise />
</xsl:choose>
