[xsl] empty string

["Yan, Charlene" <Charlene.Yan@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>]

Is there a way to put an empty string in xsl.  I use <xsl:value-of select="' '"/>.  Somehow it is automatically filled with a value of another cell.  Any ideas why?  Thanks!

      <xsl:attribute name="Row">
         <xsl:value-of select="30 + $rownumber"/>
      </xsl:attribute>     
       <xsl:value-of select="' '"/>
     </gmr:Cell>

You are using the preceding-sibling on the wrong element.
Try
   select="item/metadata/solution[not(. = preceding-sibling::solution)]"/>
