<xsl:variable name="XMLfile" select="document('myxmlfile.xml')"/>
now the content of the variable "XMLfile" is a nodeset. the first node is the root node of 'myxmlfile.xml'.
You can access the nodes in the variable like:
<xsl:value-of select=$XMLfile/child/@attOfChild/>
