This is illegal syntax.

And this is also illegal:

> <xsl:when test=".[position() mod 2 = 1]">

The syntactically correct way of expressing what you meant is:

 <xsl:when test="position() mod 2 = 1">
   <!-- Do whatever is necessary here -->
 </xsl:when>
