one way that doesn't require extending xslt at all is to use the
document() function pointing at a suitably equiped http server.
so if you have <foo tex="\frac{a}{b}"/>
then a template such as
<xsl:template match="foo">
<xsl:apply-templates select=
"document(concat('http://localhost/cgi-bin/tex2mathml?src="',@tex,'"')))"/>
will apply templates do a document
<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML">
<mfrac><mi>a</mi><mi>b</mi></mfracK
</math>
if your local http server has a suitable cgi-bin script to run the
converter.
Obviously it doesn't have to be cgi any other dynamic content creation
mechanism on the server could be used.
