It is not specified that way but in practice most (all?) implementationsIn Microsoft .NET it's different. Instead XSLT engine operates on source tree via XPathNavigator interface. So if source XML is provided in XPathNavigator-compatible form (e.g. XmlDocument (DOM) or XPathDocument), it's used directly, otherwise XPathDocument is built and used internally.
