Of course, when one finds oneself in that situation, one should actually consult the spec or a good tutorial on the language. RTFM always applies.

Exactly. It's just that RTFM -- and being able to tell the difference between the questions that the manual is likely to address, and those it's not -- is apparently a lesson that often needs to be learned the hard way. (Of course, you could always try the manual and see where that gets you. Those that have ears, let them hear.)
