Since you're asking specifically about Xalan/XSLTC behavior, you'd be
better off asking on Apache's Xalan mailing list.
First thing to check: JDK 1.3 and 1.4 came with (old and probably buggy)
versions of Xalan built in; you should start by replacing those with
current code and see if that solves the problem. See the Xalan FAQ page,
specifically:
