I forgot to mention in my previous message that my stylesheet will only work (I think) with tables whose rows have the same number of cells. That's because I used the first row, and the first row only, as the base for the selection of columns. If another row happened to have a different number of cells (e.g. if one or more cells spanned two or more columns), my stylesheet would (as far as I can tell) fail.
