The scope of a variable binding is the containing element so in this
case the variabel goes out of scope at the /when immediately it s
defined.
You don't want to conditionally define a variable, you want to define a
variable with value depending on a condition, so not
<xsl:choose>
..
<xsl:variable
...
but rather
<xsl:varable name="ddn">
<xsl:choose>
......
