Yes, the only change needed is to change the xsl:key definition to:
<xsl:key name="kWordByVal" match="word"
use="translate(.,
'ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ',
'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
)"/>
So, this is an XSLT 1.0 solution -- 50 lines of code.
