Meaning: if you have the value-of statement as you posted, and before the next value-of the context is changed, then the XPath-expression DATA/Table[@ID='2']/Data/Code[3] would be an empty nodeset if the context node has no DATA-child (relative path). Best to make sure to use the following if your DATA element is the root /DATA/Table[@ID='2']/Data/Code[3] or collect all relevant nodes into a variable using 'position() mod 2' as condition (like Ken indicated) and apply-templates to or for-each over that variable.
