Here is another solution using the node-set function.
<xsl:template match="/root/nodes">
<xsl:variable name="rtf">
<xsl:for-each select="*">
<xsl:if test="text() != ''">
<a/>
</xsl:if>
</xsl:for-each>
</xsl:variable>
<xsl:value-of
select="count(vendor:node-set($rtf)/a)" />
</xsl:template>
