> This works for some nodes but not others. it works when you're lucky and not when you're not. /categories//category[@name=$c]//product that's all the products below your chosen category but then [generate-id(@id)=generate-id(key('products-by-id', @id)[1])] just allows through those for which the id is teh first occurrence of that id in the whole document (your key doesn't use the category code) so if the id appears first in some other category it will be filtered out completely. The solution is to include the categroy code in your key <xsl:key name="products-by-id-and-category" match="@id" use="concat(ancestor::category/@name,':',.)"/> then use key('products-by-id-and-category', concat($c,':',@id)) in your $c case.
