                   it's very inefficient to have // here but without
                   seeing your source can't suggest anything else.
                   perhaps just / ?

 <xsl:variable name="thePerson" select="../customer/name"/>
   <xsl:variable name="email" select="../customer/email"/>
   <xsl:variable name="msg" select="item"/>
