A good idea -- for XSLT 2.0.

Yes it is.

XSLT 1.0 was deliberately designed like this, for reasons that were (it was 
eventually decided) not as compelling as the reasons people eventually 
demonstrated for wanting to process result trees ("temporary trees") in a 
single stylesheet run. That's why it's changing, and why you nevertheless 
have to use xxx:node-set() if you absolutely need the functionality in XSLT 
1.0.
