See: http://livestoryboard.com that is an example which confirms what I said, not contradicts it. It is sent as html: text/html; charset=UTF-8 so (presumably) uses mechanisms to ensure that the XML syntax is close enough to HTML to get past a browser's lax html parser. The comment of mine that you quote refers to sending the file with an XML mime type when it will be parsed with a real XML parser (msxml in IE and I think an expat derivative in mozilla).
