You may try like this ..
 
  <xsl:template match="p">
    <xsl:apply-templates select="span" />
  </xsl:template>

  <xsl:template match="span">
    <xsl:value-of
select="normalize-space(following-sibling::text()[1])"
/>
  </xsl:template>

(This is not tested)
