You can get the attribute names you want using

<xsl:for-each select="row">
  <xsl:variable name="aname"><xsl:number format="a"/></xsl:variable>
  <xsl:attribute name="{$aname}"><xsl:value-of select="."/></xsl:attribute>
</xsl:for-each>
