I think you misunderstood. :)  My question wasn't "why use templates",
my question was "why use templates in a context where there are not
needed?"

No I can't get on with those languages at all, very odd, variables
changing their values all over the place...

But I agree there are good reasons for not using <any lannguage
construct, in any language> I only phrased it that way as you'd phrased
