Please run my code and check what it does for you.Then show us the 
*exact* text of "the strange error", and show us what you get from 
system-property('xsl:product-version').

You stated that you use Saxon 8. I am unaware of all versions 8 in 
existence, but by the best of my knowledge, all versions from the last 
year or so happen to support this function. To be certain, I recommend 
you upgrade to the latest version of Saxon, at least version 8.8.
