and it seems rather unlikely that that was the character in the original
email, so what the original poster wants to do is not store character
x18 but rather store whichever character is encoded with byte x18 in the
original email, and that character can be encoded in XML, with byte x18
so long as the encoding is specified. (Not that I'm telling you anything
you don't already know:-)
