you don't say if teh input is known to be sorted, if it is (in xslt 1 or 2) /answers/option[last()]/@p if the input is not known to be in the right order then (in xpath 2) max(/answers/option/@p)
<xsl:for-each select="$nodes"> <xsl:sort select="sort"/> <xsl:if test="position()=1">...</xsl:if> </xsl:for-each>
