agreed, I was just musing on possible reasons why deciding on what makes
a character is contentious. People do worry that indexing via `xml
characters' means either using 32bit characters or (more likely) giving
up constant time string accessing. You (or I) may say that it is wrong
to base indexing on the arcane details of one encoding (utf16) but still
people will worry about it anyway...
