isn't a white space node it's a text node with some white space and some
non white characters.
It's _always_ best to put text inside <xsl:text> then the white space
will be ignored as it will be on its own, so
<xsl:attribute name="href">
<xsl:text>p?ax=9</xsl:text>
<xsl:if
etc
or simply don't put the space there in the first place:
<xsl:attribute name="href"
>results.asp?ax=9<xsl:if test="$meetid!=''"
>&meetid=<xsl:value-of select="$meetid"/>
