This would happen if for some reason the text after the 'Figure 1.' came
from a CDATA node. 

Since you are examining $caption_title, which could be a node set, it is
possible that it was constructed with a CDATA node.

Are you sure that they are genuine spaces not some other sort, e.g. a 
non-breaking space?
