translate() doesn't have any special characters, all characters in the
first string (including *) represent themselves and are translated to
characters in the second string.

Or are you using XPath 2 replace() function. that takes a regular
expression in which * is a meta-character and you need to use \*.
But your subject line says you are using translate().
