yeah missed the '@' sign in the name attribute. also, failed to mention that this is for XSLT 2.0.

In XSLT 2.0, this should be written without the "@":

In XSLT 1.0, it should read:

<xsl:attribute name="attrib2">0</xsl:attribute>

Using xsl:attribute with @select in a 1.0 transformation provokes a
variety of reactions from processors. Xalan C++ 1.10.0 throws an error,
LibXSLT 10120 ignores it, Saxon 9.0.0.2J processes @select as if
allowed.
