Oops, my mistake (again)... I set the DDRs the wrong way.  I hadn't
tried it on the real thing yet, just the emulators, so oops :)  thanks
for the info.

If you want to move the player around, change the 14th byte of the BIN to
00... in DOS, that'd be
debug rpg.bin
e 10D 00
w
q
