RAM location $80 only holds the value of the control byte after a supercharger load. It would only matter if you attempted to latch a new control byte into the Supercharger. The Cuttle Cart manual, available for download from atariage.com, has full details of how the Supercharger mode works from a software standpoint. It's the last section of the manual.

1FF8/9 are the only active addresses if you've loaded it with RAM writing off. (The standard way to load 2K and 4K games, likely always a disaster if you loaded non-SC games with RAM writing enabled.)

Does it crash a modified Supercharger? If not you're likely missing some access to 1FF8/9. If so, it's probably the hardware timing glitch that screws up the collision detection in Air-Sea Battle (and Haunted House?? I think that's the other one.)
