AW: [Virtools] Physics Car with Tender

Yes David, you are exactly right.

The ball and socket joint is the right way to fix the trailer to the tractor
;-)

But the wheels are penetrating the ground, that's the problem. If you
physicallize them they shuffle on the ground. They don't rotate with a hinge
because the hinge allways use the local z-axis. As default setting in 3D-Max
the z-axis is in DIR-Direction toward the front and so not usable for right
rotating. You need this default to use the wheels for Physics Car.

One solution I tried was to use the constraint BB where the x-axis has the
freedom to rotate infinitely (Min 1, Max -1). But there the wheels deny to
rotate (?!?)

A second solution could be to set the z-axis as x-axis in 3D-Max and then
use the Hinge again. But that's not really the problem I'm afraid. The Hinge
is a special kind of Constraint. And if the settings in Constraint are like
a Hinge it has to work usually. But the Physics Engine is very complex in
settings and I am gradually fet up with it. Sorry...

A third solution I have tried to set the trailer as Physics Car. But the
Physics Car need four wheels otherwise there is an error message in Event
Log and the BB is not working.
Ok, our trailer has got 12 wheels (!! yes because a trailer for heavy army
vehicles). So I used a second pair for the front wheels. But you cannot put
two Physics Cars together with a Physics Ball Joint because there is to set
no collision group (this a immense missing here!!!) and the Cars spring
apart strongly. To physicallize the "Cars" twice (before Physics Car or
after) brings no sollution. Maybe I used the wrong settings...

I just want to move the trailer with two wheels, not more!!. The other ten
wheels a will animate with copying the matrix (using the BB Mimic or a
comparable way).

At the physicallization you can set a lot of parameters concerning the
collision group (I uses the same for trailer and the wheels), surface name
and convex mesh. The settings of Phy. are:

1 CONVEX COUNT and just
Auto Mass Center Enabled.

So, what can I do?

Thanx a lot for help to all,

cu, Yours Matthias

Ok, I am really dense today, sorry.

Here is what I understand, please correct me where I am wrong :-)

You have a lead vehicle (the tractor) and a following vehicle (the trailer).

You want to drive the tractor and have the trailer follow in a realistic
manner.

If you ignore the wheels on the trailer, a ball and socket joint between the
tractor and the trailer produces the desired result.

However, there appears to be a problem with the trailer wheels and this is
where I am confused.

1) they are penetrating the ground?
or
2) they are not rolling along the ground
or
3) both
or
4) something else entirely is happening?

Is the trailer also a Physics Car?

Hope to be able to help you soon :-)

David Callele
