Many XSLT processors (including Saxon) use internal tree structures that are *vastly* more efficient than DOM: but they still have to hold the whole document in memory. You could consider putting the data in an XML database and accessing it using XQuery. I do wonder why anyone wants to produce a 200Mb PDF document: surely no-one would want to read it?
