Fun Jobs.com

(April 03, 2001) In the tradition of (and in an adjacent niche to) CoolJobs, we discovered Fun Jobs.com. Our background checks on FunJobs led us to Employment911.com. The Alexa Related links for Employment911 pointed to We've never heard of most of these operations. And that's the way we think the Job Board industry is supposed to operate.

FunJobs.com, where we started this little research adventure, is a subsidiary of Gordon's, the adventure magazine. With key relationships with the kinds of people who look for adventurous travel (and really, really want to work in exotic places), the operation needs little in the way of fancy technology to manage and (excuse the word) monetize the job seekers they encounter.

Like most job boards with success in their futures, these tiny operations care more about marginal income than they do about grandeur and IPOs. They are regional businesses at the intersection of geography, professional interest or market demographics. They can be profitable to the extent that they are free from technical development costs, dreams of glory and unabated greed. OPM would simply break them.

The question we face as an industry is how to celebrate these little operations without derailing their organic growth. If you really want to reach out to job seekers who aren't in the mad rush at the big brands, it requires ongoing surveillance and testing of these little outlets. They are multiplying faster now than ever before.
