On Da Bayou

(May 17, 2001) Almost unnoticed, Monster recently added the 10,000,000th resume to their massive database. And, they recently became an advertiser in our newsletters. Our kids know the name from all of the MTV spots they buy. Their current billboards remind us of the old Seven-Up uncola billboards from the 70s; it's all about branding for them.

In spite of our predisposition to view them as a mindless juggernaut, these items all indicate that a new thing is happening. Monster is actually and effectively redefining the industry for the rest of the world. The price one pays for industry leadership appears to be an educational tax. Monster is single-handedly carrying the educational freight and making the rest of the world more interested in using our services. They are growing the industry and making it into something new.

Ten Million single page resumes would be a stack of paper over a mile high. Laid end to end, they would stretch 1700 miles. In a database, where they represent 7.6% of the workforce, they represent a fascinating data mine that creates the opportunity to measure and predict some amazing things. With a database that large, you could start to anticipate the likelihood that candidate X was about to have a "CareerQuake" (as our friend Phil Wolf like to call them). If you could figure out something that 50% of the database would buy for $100, you could get rich.

A database that size is a lot like a swamp in Louisiana....murky, stinky, full of alligators but very likely to sit on top of an oil well. With brave persistent guides, the thing can be mined, mapped and built upon. It represents a landmark occasion in our industry. It's good for all of us.

Look who's gone local!

There is an established job board making new waves in the online recruiting industry. CareerWeb.com, a subsidiary of Trader Publishing Company, is poised for strong growth. Careerweb.com is the online companion to The Employment Guide, a localized print publication with a weekly circulation of 3 million papers. Using the Employment Guide as advertising, Careerweb.com has grown to a sizable site with over 100,000 job searches per day. So why use CareerWeb.com instead of Monster or Hotjobs?

CareerWeb.com is building a network of localized sites. Recruiters can post jobs locally. Similarly, job seekers will find only local jobs. The local site idea is appealing to job seekers who lack the time to search a monstrous job database, and who are not willing to relocate for a "hot" job. Jobseekers like that search results are more specific to their needs.

Check out the first three of these local sites at: OrlandoCareerWeb.com, RaleighCareerWeb.com, and ChicagoCareerWeb.com.

Your Lifeline to Medical Careers HealthCareerWeb.com is CareerWeb.com's first industry-specific site. It is devoted to the booming Healthcare job market. If you are a recruiter for the healthcare industry, this site is an indispensable tool.
