As I read the CSS Recommendation, 'text-indent' should be inherited,
but neither IE4 nor Communicator4 (for UN*X) appear to implement it
this way.

There is no 'right way', but you certainly CAN do it that way. The
use of DIV and SPAN in the samples in the XSLJ distribution is
illustrative, not normative.
