About the only printed book with an explanation of DSSSL is "XML Complete" by Steven Holzner. The chapter on XML style covers DSSSL because it was written before the XSL Note came out and the style component of XML was still to be called XS and based on DSSSL. I wouldn't recommend it as an XML book, since it was rushed out before the XML recommendation was finalised, and I'm not sure that I'd recommend it to anyone starting out with SGML and XML because the examples in the DSSSL component uses tag like <font>, <tab>, and <pagenumber>. Maybe it's like that to make the examples easier, but it sure doesn't teach you to separate format from content. Its major advantage is that it's in print. Have you looked at the material so far in the DSSSL documentation project at http://www.mulberrytech.com/dsssl/dsssldoc?
