I agree that XSL is no simpler for authors than DSSSL - but not with the initial premise that DSSSL itself is too hard to be useful. Most DSSSL projects start with a basic transformation, then add the bells and whistles onto the initial working program, so the complexity of a "finished" stylesheet is probably not a good indicator.
