Most of the folks in the tech doc field that I have spoken with tell me that you risk life and limb using Word for documents over 100 pages. You have either been lucky or proven them wrong.
I would recommend the Master Document functionality (which allows you to link/manage numerous smaller documents under one master) but have found it unreliable and scary.
In the end it might not solve your problem anyway but you would have subdivided your large file into editable chunks. Come print time, I don't know what would happen.
