I'm sorry, I should have explained it. The literal translation for
'Elfstedentocht' is approximately 'Eleven city tour'. It is a
skating tour over 200 km starting and ending in Leeuwarden. The tour
passes through eleven Dutch, i.e. Fries, villages, hence the name. It
is only organised if the ice on the waters connecting the cities is
thick enough. Unfortunately this does not happen every year.....
