alignment-point?

Hi!
I just tried to figure out how the alignment-point flow object and the
corresponding characteristics in paragraph et.al. have to be used. Just I
didn't quite get the point.

As I understand it, this is just to align numerical data (e.g. currency
values) at special points (e.g. a period or comma). But what is the syntax
to achieve this?

Has anyone an example for this?
