Subject: The big picture From: "John W. Shipman" <john@xxxxxxx> Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 17:25:31 -0600 (MDT) |
I'm responsible for documentation at a modest-sized college computer center. We have done some documents in DocBook for output as PostScript (by the TeX route) and HTML. I'd like to do a lot more customization, but I'm quite daunted at the steep learning curve for DSSSL. Before I invest too much more time in DSSSL, I would really like to get a better feel for trends in DSSSL and its competitors. - Is DSSSL on its way out except among a few diehards? - Assuming XHTML 1.0 is the Web of the Future, will XSL and CSS coexist, or is one of them looking like it will become the dominant technology? I understand they have converged on the same internal rendering machine---is that true? - What is the Document Object Model and how does it fit in? - Is there another trend I've missed? If you prefer, reply privately and I will post a summary to the list. In particular, if there is a newsgroup or web page that talks about these trends, I'd like to see it.
