Adam,

I located the problem. It is in the adjustments I made to the DocBook
stylesheets!
Amoung other things, I defined

(define %default-quadding% 'justify)

This define is causing the problems ;-( Apparently with the tex-backend
this did not work the way I thought how it would work.
