To clear up another part of the mystery, &#65533; is a reference to
U+FFFD, REPLACEMENT CHARACTER, which is meant to be used when an
application doesn't know how to map an input character to a Unicode
character.  Presumably OJ isn't making sense of &ae; and is replacing
it with REPLACEMENT CHARACTER.
