I found 8 hits in Google, but they all indicate that it's for the PDF
back end.  Not RTF, then?

I don't like the PDF backend.  If there's underlining within a word in
italics (and possibly in other cases), it puts a space before it: what
is intended (and comes out in RTF) as
    Mellicent

(I show the underlining as a separate line of hyphens) is shown in PDF as
