Hi, Laura: I'd like to remind you of your own reply when I had a similar question back in February: === Subject: RE: [jats-list] JATS 1.0: Seemingly contradictory usage recommendations for <series-text> and <series-title> From: "Randall, Laura (NIH/NLM/NCBI) [E]" <laura.randall@xxxxxxx> Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2013 15:52:08 +0000 I definitely see the discrepancy, but I don't see them as contradictory. Sasha, I would expand your emphasis in the Remarks of <series> thus: <series-text> and <series-title> are used to identify a collection of articles *within an issue or a collection of similar articles across multiple issues* So we're looking at one that says "within one issue" and one that says "within an issue or a collection of similar articles across multiple issues." One covers more options than the other, I don't see them as contradicting each other. Still, it would be good to have the expanded usage documented in <article-categories>. Best, Laura ________________________________________ From: Alexander Schwarzman [aschwarzman@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, February 04, 2013 10:17 AM To: jats-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [jats-list] JATS 1.0: Seemingly contradictory usage recommendations for <series-text> and <series-title> The Related Elements section of the <article-categories> entry in the JATS 1.0 Tag Library states: Grouping Articles in Series: The related elements <series-title> and <series-text> are used for groupings of articles *within one issue of a journal*. For example, in some journals, articles are grouped into a series such as From the Cover and identified as part of a series. The <series-title> element names the series, and the <series-text> element provides textual descriptions (if any) describing the series. (Emphasis mine -- SS) However, the Remarks section for the <series> entry states: <series-text> and <series-title> are used to identify a collection of articles within an issue *or a collection of similar articles across multiple issues*. For example, a single issue of a journal may contain numerous colloquium papers that can be identified as part of a series by including <series-title>Colloquium</series- title> in each articles metadata. An example of a series that spans issues is the Inaugural Article series in PNAS. These articles from newly-elected members of the National Academy of Sciences are all part of the same series, but appear in different issues of the journal. (Emphasis mine -- SS) This seems contradictory: should the usage of <series-title> and <series-text> be restricted to article groupings/collections within one journal issue only or can these elements be used for such grouping spanning multiple journal issues? Thank you, Alexander ('Sasha') Schwarzman === On Tue, Jul 30, 2013 at 7:54 AM, Randall, Laura (NIH/NLM/NCBI) [E] <laura.randall@xxxxxxx> wrote: > Hello, all. > > Does anyone know if the JATS has a way to tag series information in an article's metadata that applies to a series that isn't limited to a single issue? > > I know about <series-title> and <series-text> in <article-categories>, but the definition of <series-title> clearly states that it only applies to a series within a single issue of a journal. > > http://jats.nlm.nih.gov/publishing/tag-library/1.0/?elem=series-title > "Title of the journal series (bibliographic) or series of articles internal to one issue of a journal" > > We're working with a publisher who identifies "Research Topics" in some of their articles and then provides a summary and a list of the articles on that topic.
