Subject: [jats-list] Mononyms From: Alf Eaton <eaton.alf@xxxxxxxxx> Date: Thu, 31 Oct 2013 15:49:26 +0000 |
I was looking for guidance on how to mark up authors with a single name (in this specific case, it's an Indonesian mononym). From the documentation quotes below, I'm leaning towards using <name><surname>Afiahayati</surname></name>, rather than <name name-style="given-only"><given-names>Afiahayati</given-names></name>, as the way surnames are treated downstream seems more appropriate. Does anyone know of any reasons why using <surname> in this case would be inappropriate? Thanks, Alf ============================== The JATS documentation says: "There is no single style that best handles all single (one-part) names. Tibetan, Indian, and Burmese single names that are not surnames may be tagged as <given-names>; there is no need to commit the tag abuse of calling the given name a surname. Most westernized single names (bPeleb, bPrinceb, bBabyfaceb, bAztekb) are more likely to be retrieved properly if they are tagged as <surname>s." http://jats.nlm.nih.gov/publishing/tag-library/1.0/n-i7n0.html ============================== Taylor & Francis says: "Note that <surname> is also used to capture mononyms (or a bsingle nameb), such as bPlatob, bPelC)', or bNapoleonb." http://routledgebooksproduction.com/back/references.htm ============================== PubMed says: "Can Single Personal Author Names be supplied to PubMed? Yes. A Single Personal Author Name, when a person has only one name, should be included by using the EmptyYN attribute for the <FirstName> tag within an <Author> tag. The default value for the EmptyYN attribute is "N"; indicating that the <FirstName> tag should not be empty. [...] <AuthorList> <Author> <FirstName EmptyYN="Y"></FirstName> <MiddleName></MiddleName> <LastName>Matiullah</LastName> </Author> <Author> <FirstName EmptyYN="N">S.</FirstName> <LastName>Rehman</LastName> </Author> </AuthorList> " http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK3828/#publisherhelp.Can_Single_Personal_ ==============================
