Hi all,

In the working group's final recommendations for JATS 1.0, comment 161 includes information about additional methods for tagging references to standards. The tag library examples were never updated to reflect the decision by the working group. Furthermore, the existing examples for the <std> element do not reflect common editorial styles when citing standards in a bibliography.

In line with comment 161, I'd like to offer the following examples as recommended practice for tagging standards using source and pub-id:

<ref id="ref1"><label>1.</label><mixed-citation publication-type="standard"><pub-id pub-id-type="std-designation">ISO 832:1994</pub-id>, <source>Information and documentation -- Bibliographic description and references -- Rules for the abbreviation of bibliographic terms</source></mixed-citation></ref>

<ref id="ref2"><label>2.</label><mixed-citation publication-type="standard"><pub-id pub-id-type="std-designation">ISO 78-2:1999</pub-id>, <source>Chemistry -- Layouts for standards -- Part 2: Methods of chemical analysis</source></mixed-citation></ref>

<ref id="ref3"><label>3.</label><mixed-citation publication-type="standard"><pub-id pub-id-type="std-designation">IEEE 802.3u-1995</pub-id>, <source>IEEE Standards for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks--Supplement to Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) Access Method and Physical Layer Specifications--Media Access Control (MAC) Parameters, Physical Layer, Medium Attachment Units, and Repeater for 100 Mb/s Operation.</source></mixed-citation></ref>

Notes:
1. This markup leaves behind the <std> element and give greater granularity by using pub-id and source
2. CrossRef has just introduced the standard_designator element into the CrossRef query schema (http://doi.crossref.org/schemas/crossref_query_input2.0.xsd), and the content of pub-id, as illustrated here, will map directly to the recommended content for the standard_designator element. Please note that the year is considered part of the designator for a standard and is _not_ a separate semantic element in this context.

I have also seen cases when standards are cited like "books". The next example is such a case and is recommended markup for this case:

<ref id="ref4"><label>4.</label><mixed-citation publication-type="book"><person-group person-group-type="author"><collab>National Information Standards Organization</collab></person-group>. <source>Syntax for the Digital Object Identifier</source>. <publisher-loc>New York</publisher-loc>: <publisher-name>American National Standards Institute</publisher-name>; <year>2000</year>. <size units="pages">24 pp.</size> (<pub-id pub-id-type="std-designation">ANSI/NISO Z39.84-2000</pub-id>).</mixed-citation></ref>

Thanks!

Bruce
