Hi David,

Adding a <related-article> element in the translated article's front matter
pointing to the original language article seems like a very suitable XML
encoding for your situation. This element will need a @related-article-type
attribute, which could be "translated-article" or
"original-language-article", depending on how specific you wish to be on
the semantics of the article that this element is pointing to. It will also
include a pointer to the DOI of the original language article in
@xlink:href, and can even include the language of the original article
in @hreflang attribute (in JATS versions 1.3 and 1.4).

Finally, the contents of the <related-article> can optionally include other
metadata of the original language article, such as its <article-title>, its
contributors in <person-group>, its publication date in <date> and other
citation metadata, such as <source>, <volume>, <issue>, <fpage> and <lpage>.

For example:

<related-article related-article-type="original-language-article"
hreflang="fr" ext-link-type="doi" xlink:href="10.xxxx/original-article-doi">
     <person-group>....</person-group>
     <article-title>....</article-title>
     <date>....</date>
     <source>.....</source>
     <volume>....</volume>
     <issue>....</issue>
     <fpage>....</fpage>
     <lpage>....</lpage>
</related-article>

Best regards,
Nikos
